Life and Liberty

The 4th of July has come and gone and many people think of the holiday as a day they get off work or a day they see the fireworks.

We as Americans take what we have as people of that nation for granted. What do we have; just the greatest nation for opportunity and freedoms that has ever existed in history. If you agree with this statement you I know that there are some that do not agree but think that we are a nation of greed and evil. History tells us the heart of this nation when it began and the direction and ideals that still, thank God, exist today. The document that spells it out is the Declaration of Independence pinned July 4th, 1776 by a group of men that sacrificed dearly for the words and their oaths to stand by them to the death.” We hold these truths to be self-evident: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” This statement from this document is the center of the American dream of liberty. The authors and signers of this document considered the rights given by God and unalienable. Unalienable means: incapable of being repudiated or transferred to another. They are inseparable as a goal of the human experience and should be cherished and protected.

These rights are under attack today as they have never been before. Incrementally they are given to the government and taken away from the people. We have ourselves to blame as we see it the next part of the wording of the Document, “ to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends.” People somehow think the government is separate from the people and has unlimited wealth but as you read it gets its powers from the consent of the people, it gets its wealth from the people. We have what we have asked for in government if it is to be changed it will have to begin with the people.

We need to wake up and do the right thing, right thinking is important, I don’t mean right or left thinking but thinking that puts life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness before government control and reaches a balance of reasonable controls and laws to promote these ideals. We have not done our homework toward elected officials. Self-seeking individuals with slick promises have dominated the government because of our apathy. I trust the American people to do the right thing. Abe Lincoln said, ” You can fool some of the people all the time, and all the people some of the time but you can’t fool all the people all the time.” Is it time for The United States citizens to wake up?
